BRIEF HOMILY FOR 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

By: Cajetan Anyanwu

HOMILY THEME: “THUS THE LAST WILL BE FIRST, AND THE FIRST, LAST”.

This is the 25th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr.A). The generosity of God cannot be measured by human standards. God looks at the heart not on faces. He says: “Yes, the heavens are as high above earth as my ways are above your ways, my thoughts above your thoughts (Is. 55:6-9). Since the love of God has no limits, we should not take it for granted and do what we like. We must do the right thing at the right time always.

To encourage us, Jesus gave us the parable of the landowner who hired laborers to work in his vineyard. The first group came early enough but were paid the same amount as the last group. Probably the first group took it for granted that the landowner will pay them and were not serious with their job. Seeing this, the landowner weent out and called more workers. The second group also took the landowner and the job for granted. Then he went out at the eleventh hour and hired more laborers. This group worked harder because they had not plenty of time. Then they were paid first. “Thus, the last will be first, and the first, last” (Mtt. 20:1-16). The various groups received the same amount because God is fair to all.

The lessons we should learn from this parable are numerous. One is that we should not take God’s generosity for granted. Again, we should be serious with our faith and commitment to follow Christ. If the first and second groups were serious before the 11th hour the landowner would not have gone out to look for more workers. Hence, Paul says ; “Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ ” (Phil. 1:20-24,27). Another lesson to learn is that, anyone who comes to Jesus with repentant heart is acceptable any time and at any hour. Let us pray to work hard always to sustain our faith in God amen. Happy Sunday.
