33RD SUNDAY  IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A) – HOMILY

THEME: What is your Talent?

By: Fr. Justus Oruma

(a) There is no human being who is not endowed with one Talent or the other by the good God.

(b) There is an Igbo song that says, “gbaa mbọ mata nke Chineke nyere gi, were ya, rụbara ya ọrụ”- Talents are given to be used. Find out the Talent God has gaven you, use it for the good of humanity and for the glory of God. Note that most of those who are not happy with life are those who have either not realized their talent(s) or those have, but out of doubt, laziness and fear left their Talents unused. So they are like the man in the Gospel, who out of fear buried the one and only Talent God gave him.

(c) Some are envious and jealous of the Talents God gave to another, some leave the one God gave them which is ORIGINAL to them by Nature, pursing what is meant for another which makes them look ARTIFICIAL in life. Some, their Talents have brought them pride, they now insult and look down on others because of their Talents. Some have used their talents to intimidate others. Some used the talents and gifts God gave them for sinful and shameful things. We remember that on the last day, each one is to render account of the Talent(s) he/she has received on the last day. We are to make something good out of the Talents God has given us. Example is to be taken from the woman in the book of Proverbs, “a worthy woman, her value is far beyond the pearls. “She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy.” That is how to invest the Talents, multiple them and make them bring more Talents. Your joy of life and fulfillment in life is that your God-given Talent and gifts multiplies itself in many people, making many people happy.
