2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – YEAR  B

HOMILY: 3RD SUNDAY IN ADVENT [YEAR B]

2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – YEAR  B

THEME: Approach Jordan; Change Something!

By: Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor

Is 40:1-5, 9-11; Ps 85:9-10-11-12, 13-14; 2 Pt 3:8-14; Mk 1:1-8

The first reading is a message of hope; one that comes with expectations of lasting peace as Israel looks forward to their return to Jerusalem after their seventy-year stay in Exile. In this reading, one can count at least four of Handel’s great classical pieces. Its message is fulfilled in the text of our gospel. Yes! The long awaited forunner of the Messiah comes. He begins to cry in the wilderness. He wants us to change something in our lives; to fill-in the valleys and lay low the mountains. He wants us to prepare the way for the Lord, making straight his paths. Many hear his voice and come to him at the Jordan to receive a baptism of repentance…

ALSO RECOMMENDED: SERMON/HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR B

Friends, this second week of Advent calls us to Jordan. It calls us to heed John’s voice and make every effort to actually ‘do something’ – to let go of a bad habit, to seek forgiveness and reconciliation from those with whom we’re not in good terms, and to seek Christ’s face in the sacrament of penance and the Holy Eucharist. This is true comfort. This is how we must await new heavens and a new earth. This is how we anticipate the one who’s greater and mightier than John. It can’t be done if we do not first approach Jordan. Understand?

Good morning dear friends. God bless your Sunday and your week ahead.
