WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF 13TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “DO NOT BE UNBELIEVING, BUT BELIEVE.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle. John 20:24-29

“Seeing is believing” is probably an apt alias for today’s celebrated Apostle, St. Thomas. His suspicion and insistent disbelief bore good fruits, even beyond a second appearance to the disciples and his restoration. From it comes the famous and ancient devotional Eucharistic acclamation, “My Lord and my God,” a declaration that was falsely self-ascribed to and enforced by Emperor Domitian, but which indeed rightfully belonged to the One who was in the beginning with God, who himself is God.

From it also comes the wonderful blessing reserved for those, who come to faith through the courageous witness of the Apostles, a reaffirmation of Jesus’ prayer (John 17:20) for those who come to faith because of the word of his disciples. From it also comes the understanding that no matter how deep we are in our faith, we sometimes experience doubt or despair. At such times, Jesus is on hand to restore us directly and through our community of faith. Let us also be assured that as often as that community of faith is gathered around in Jesus’ Name, his peace abounds; and we must bring it with us as a gift to those around us. May every Eucharistic encounter bring us to a greater awareness of Jesus as Lord and God, and renew our faith in him, to the glory of God.

Lord, strengthen our faith to counter the forces of unbelief, doubt and despair. Amen.
