SUNDAY HOMILY: SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE ONE NOT THREE
BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu
This Sunday the church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Father(Phil. 1:2), the Son (Titus 2:13), and the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3-4) are One not three. In mathematical terms this is a wrong equation, because 1+1+1 = 3 and not =1. Here is a mystery surpassing human and mathematical understanding. The Most Holy Trinity is One God in 3 persons not figures in mathematical sense. “For there are three who bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one (1John 5:7). The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit act at the same time. Therefore, the Trinity is indivisible and equal in majesty.

We are celebrating a mystery that gives the church it’s power to act in the name of Jesus who says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has bee given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and os the Son and of the Holy Spirit ” (Mtt. 28:16-20). This means that all the Sacraments are celebrated by the church in the name of the Blessed Trinity as a mandate she received from Jesus who is God the Son.
God the Holy Spirit is also present in the Church directing its affairs and bringing it to fulfilment. The Most Holy Trinity is fully at work when Jesus said: “And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.” This assurance by Jesus to the church gives us the idea that truly “the gates of the underworld shall never prevail against it” (Mtt. 16:18). The Most Holy Trinity is with the church at all times. The proof of this is that the Church has faced many persecutions in this world and is still active today. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, it’s now and forever Amen! Happy Trinity Sunday.
