SUNDAY HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI)

HOMILY THEME: “THIS IS MY BODY! THIS IS MY BLOOD!!”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

My Morning Minute With Jesus

Today, we Celebrate the perfection of God’s love for us in Christ. With the blood of animals, the Israelites had their first Passover and delivery from slavery. Following the Exodus, God made a covenant with them, which Moses sealed with the blood of animals. Because of the imperfection of this first covenant, God promised a new, better and more inclusive covenant through the prophets. In Christ, that promise was fulfilled, sealing the new covenant with His blood. The enactment of that new covenant began at the last supper, where Jesus gave us his body and blood, and culminated upon the cross, where, as the mediator of the new covenant, He paid the supreme price for our salvation. Each Eucharistic encounter fully celebrates that sacrifice in its unbloody manner, just like Jesus did at the last supper.

We celebrate His real presence amongst us, body, soul and divinity, under the appearances of bread and wine. With His body and blood, He purifies, feeds and nourishes us for our sustenance now and for our Journey to eternity. He is indeed the Bread of Life. Hence the Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life; the fullness of life itself for all believers. Without it, we are lifeless. At every Eucharist, we encounter Christ himself. Having received him, we become what we receive in order to bring him to the world around us. Cherish it; abide in it.

Jesus, Bread of Heaven, feed me now and evermore. Amen.
