(Mark: 10:2-16) Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time and the culmination of the Season of Creation, Jesus deals with the question of divorce. Jesus said that Moses granted the giving of divorce because of the hardness of heart of the people. In a way, Jesus claims that Moses was forced to compromise God’s commandment. Thus, He reminded them of the plan of God from the very beginning. The order was that God made them male and female and thus, their union creates a new family.

As good stewards, we must respect creation. Hardness of heart will bring us nowhere. If we insist, we might get away with what we want but at what cost? And, like Moses, the Church may also be forced. However, so far, the Church had stuck to the teachings. Even though there are so much pressure, the doctrines on reproductive health, death penalty, marriage, priesthood, etc., for example, were held.

But the position of the Church, as revealed and willed by God in Jesus Christ must find its presence in the laws. The laws must be Christified. Recent developments in laws threatens this position, this belief. People are not only members of faith, they are also citizens of nations. To create laws against their belief brings confusion and difficulties to peoples. it is our hope that laws would respect the faith of the citizenry.

We need to regain our childlikeness. That is what will make us worthy of the Kingdom. Nature has its laws. Things had been created by God for a purpose. That purpose includes our own benefit since we are God’s best creation. Let us obey nature. It is also a proof of our obedience to God, the Creator.
