Short homily for Thursday of the 33rd Week in Ordinary Time Cycle I
Theme: Jesus wept over Jerusalem
By: Fr. Walter Ihejirika
Homily for Thursday November 18 2021
In today’s gospel Jesus wept over Jerusalem because of the unrighteous lives of her inhabitants. They did not recognize his presence in their midst. The life they lived was in sharp contrast with the zeal for keeping the law shown by Mattathias and his sons as recounted in the first reading (2 Maccabees 2:15-29)
Dear friends, let us imitate Matthias and his sons. They rejected all enticement of power and wealth to stand firm in obeying the laws of the Lord. Each day, we too are faced with many enticements seeking to move us away from the path of righteousness. Let us endeavor to stand firm knowing that what we loose in material benefit we gain in spiritual richness which draws us closer to God. May no action of yours today cause tears to fall from another person’s cheek, because God weeps over injustice and unrighteousness.
May we bring joy and not tears. Have a joy-full day.
