Short homily for Thursday of the 29th week in Ordinary Time Cycle I

Theme: Division by Fire?

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Homily for Thursday October 21 2021

Rom.6:19-23; Luke 12:49-53

Some of us do love the mention of ‘fire’. Right? Why not? We want fire to consume the witch-like old people around us. We want fire to kill our enemies and arrest all our problems and challenges… Hey! Listen! The fire Jesus speaks of is that of purification. It’s also zeal for the cause of righteousness. Jesus is not interested in fake peace; the kind that makes us afraid to speak the truth, or correct one another, or act to upset the balance of a corrupt and oppressive system.

This is what St Paul talks about in the first reading. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to strengthen our weaknesses, that Christ may reign supreme in our members. This power moves us to put to death sin and lies. It’s a force that’s beyond reckoning; a fire that burns impurities. Friends, let’s open our hearts to this fire, for the wages of sin is death. Let the deceptive striving for fake peace stop now. Let’s embrace the necessary division that leads to true peace. We disagree that we may agree on better principles and values. Lord have mercy!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
