Short homily for Monday of the 26th week in Ordinary Time Cycle I

Theme: Vincent the Poor?

By: Rev. Fr. Kevin Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Homily for Monday September 27 2021

(St Vincent De Paul, Priest).

Zech.8:1-8; Luke 9:46-50

When I was a lot younger, I couldn’t exactly tell the difference between Vincent De Paul, and Vincent the Poor. All I heard was the latter. And I always wondered how apt it was that one who was so concerned with the poor was named after the poor. I never realised he was in fact Vincent De PAUL, and not Vincent the POOR. You probably have heard about the Vincentians, or the Sisters of Charity. These are holy men and women who actually do something about the many poor people around, after the example of Vincent De Paul.

Friends, in the gospel reading of today, Jesus says that if we must truly be great, we must put everyone else first, and make ourselves least. This divine principle is also the fundamental principle of service and discipleship. The problem with us today is that we have too many people talking, while only a few actually ‘walk the talk’. If we must be truly great, then we must deny ourselves most times, go out of our comfort zones, and expend our energies in service of the less privileged among us. Try to be of service to someone today!

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead. St Vincent De Paul, pray for us.
