Short homily for Monday of 1st Week in Ordinary Time Cycle II

Theme: Fishers of Men!

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese).

Homily for Monday January 10 2022

1 Sam.1:1-8; Psalm 115(116):12-19; Mark 1:14-20

Many years ago, while we were rounding off our Seminary formation, my then Rector, the Rite Rev Msgr. Michael Sasa, introduced us to an amazing documentary titled, “Fishers of Men”. He wanted us to understand what ministry meant. In truth, that documentary, put together by the Bishops’ Conference of the United States of America, made such a huge impression on us. It showed us that we have been called to live for others; to rejoice with them, to weep with them, to journey with our flock through all the trials and tribulations of their lives.

Friends, as we begin Ordinary Time once more, Jesus invites us to focus on him first. He wants us to leave everything that distracts us immediately, and follow him, that he may teach us how to be Fishers of Men. But how can we be Fishers, if we’re not first ‘fished’ by him? Others may mock our seeming misfortunes, as Peninnah did to Hannah in the first reading. But if we make ourselves available for God to use, he’ll sort out all troubles and give us reasons for thanksgiving. God calls us today. Are we ready to become fishers of men and women?

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
