SERMON/HOMILY FOR 13TH SUNDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: JESUS THE SOURCE OF HEALING AND RESTORATION!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Wisdom 1:13-15, 2: 23 – 24; Ps. 30; 2 Corinthians 8: 7, 9, 13 -15; Mark 5: 21- 43
In a nation like Nigeria, where the depth of pain and suffering is often acutely felt, the scriptural messages of hope and healing bear special relevance today. The first reading assures us that death was not God’s doing, neither was it part of his plan. But even now, for those who have faith and do God’s will, death is only a transformation into life. This is why the choices we make while we’re here on earth matter. In the second reading, St. Paul urges the Corinthians to excel in the grace of giving, modeling Christ’s example of selflessness. In a context marked by widespread poverty and inequality, this call to share abundantly resonates deeply. By extending our resources to those in need, we become conduits of God’s healing and restoration within our communities.

Friends, Jesus himself shows us the impact of his healing and restorative power in the gospel reading. Here, St. Mark presents two compelling narratives. First, we see Jairus, a synagogue official, who implores Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Despite the crowd’s skepticism and the seeming hopelessness of the situation, Jesus reassures Jairus and miraculously revives the young girl. In the second story, a woman enduring a twelve-year hemorrhage is healed by her faith-driven act of touching Jesus’ cloak. Her persistence and faith are rewarded with immediate restoration. These stories speak powerfully to Nigeria’s own struggles with seemingly insurmountable challenges like poverty, corruption, ethnic tensions, and violence. The Gospel’s message reassures us that no situation is beyond Christ’s healing touch. As we reach out in faith, emulating the woman’s act of touching Jesus’ cloak, let us also seek to heal the divisions, injustices, and violence within our society through love, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
