OUR LADY OF SORROWS HOMILY — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “WOMAN, BEHOLD, YOUR SON.” THEN HE SAID TO THE DISCIPLE, “BEHOLD, YOUR MOTHER.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Jesus did not suffer alone. His mother suffered a great deal as well, both in her role as mother and in her accommodation of her beloved Son’s sufferings. Humanly speaking, uncertainty marked the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the moment of Jesus’ conception. In faith, she embraced the strange outcomes of the Angel’s visit to her and faced all the challenges that came her way thereafter.

Remember that Luke tells us that hers were the first ears that heard the words: “nothing is impossible with God.” She trusted that God, not just regarding the news of Elizabeth’s old-age pregnancy, but also, with the lowliness and scarcity surrounding Jesus’ birth, the flight to Egypt and return, the loss of Jesus from the caravan when he was 12, the insult and rejection suffered by Jesus in his mission, his arrest, trial, condemnation and shameful crucifixion, and of course, his death and burial. She witnessed everything and suffered with him to the very end. Each time I see the Pieta Statue, I am overwhelmed just thinking about the suffering she absorbed. She is indeed the Mother of Sorrows. Yet, her suffering was not for nothing. She shares eternal life with her Son in heaven. Her Fiat also made our salvation possible. She accompanies us and every suffering mother in our sufferings.
Mother of Sorrows; pray for us. Amen.
