HOMILY THEME: THE POWER TO COMMUNICATE RENEWAL!

Acts 2:1-11; Ps.104:1-34; Gal. 5:16-25; John 15:26-27,16:12-15
As I reflect on the Feast of Pentecost, I think about the unction to speak in a language that everyone can understand; the power to speak inspired words that lead to total renewal and transformation; first of ourselves, and then of others. Today, fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, the Holy Spirit came down powerfully on the Apostles in tongues of fire, casting out their timidity, doubt and fear, and giving them the power to communicate to the many people from all over the world who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover.

Friends, the Holy Spirit leads us to harmony, not discord. When we begin to fight over spiritual gifts, wondering whose gift is best; when we begin to compete in speaking tongues, even when we fail to transform our lives and the lives of those around us in simple enough language; when we continue to discriminate in God’s Church, separating the rich from the poor, the Igbos from the Yorubas and Hausas; when we continue to dwell in carnality; then we’ve missed the message of Pentecost. Today, the Holy Spirit is ready to drive out from us fornication, gross indecency and sexual irresponsibility; idolatry and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions, envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things, and fill us with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful!
