HOMILY/SERMON FOR THE 26TH SUNDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “ANYONE WHO IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Num. 11: 25-29, Ps. 19, James 5: 1-6, Mark 9: 38-43, 45. 47-48

The Lord draws our attention to the following today. Christians spend too much time fighting one another. We must unite against our common religious, moral, social and political enemies and detractors; emphasizing the areas of agreement and making sincere efforts to bridge the differences. Love and respect, not even tolerance, are what Christ demands of us, when dealing with those differences.

The Lord also urges us to be mindful of the weak, underprivileged and poor in our midst; while at the same time ensuring that we do not become sources of scandal to the younger generations or the weak in faith. Lastly, we must be constantly vigilant in our faith journey, watching out for occasions of sin and cutting them out of our lives. Such vigilance demands sacrifice. Making such sacrifices prevents the greater calamity of losing our eternal inheritance in heaven. The one big sin that we must fight against is enslavement to money and material security. St. James reminds us that such enslavement causes the loss of our eternal inheritance. Knowing that eternity would separate us from our wealth and trusted securities puts things in proper perspective in our relationship with God and humans. Wealth, influence, fame and power must not be sources of disrespect, pride and arrogance. They are fleeting and empty. Let us stay focused on what is right, proper, enduring, truly fruitful and life-giving.

Lord, keep us generous, selfless, vigilant and humble. Amen.
