HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: BROTHERLY WINS

BY: Fr. Onuoja Bright Day

Ezekiel 9:1-7,10:18-22, Ps. 113:1-6, Matthew 18:15-20

God intends that all human beings will come to his kingdom on the last day. His salvation is ultimately brought by Jesus Christ who is the bearer of the salvation of humanity. But before the advent of the ultimate salvation, men and women who live in the world are prone to disputes.

In the face of disputes, Jesus in the gospel reading of today, calls us to be brotherly in settling disputes. Call your brother first, or go to your brother first and table your grievances against him. This is better and more Christian than to take your brother and begin to gossip him up and down. Go to your brother in private and the two of you can settle the matter. But, in case your brother is a very difficult one and will not want reconciliation, Jesus says, take another Christian brother, and if that will not work take him to the church. Let the church manage the case.

Settling disputes and forgiving one another is necessary on our journey of faith because, Christ does not want the damnation of any one of his followers. It is bad for a Christian to vow never to forgive nor settle discord. It becomes an evil act, for a Christian to carry a fellow Christian to a place where your brother will be hurt down, in a place of charm, or killed. Let us settle amicably for we are brothers and friends of Christ.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, help us to be more Christian and more charitable to one another with words. Grant us the grace of reconciliation and forgiveness.
We pray for all those who have vowed never to forgive their brother and all those who are still hurting from a particular evil done to them. Lord, grant them lasting healing and a heart of a Christian in Jesus name. AMEN
