HOMILY OF TUESDAY AFTER THE PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: GLOW WITHOUT PRIDE!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

2 Cor 1:18-22; Psalm 119:119-135; Matt 5:13-16

Virtues become vices when they are coloured with pride. In the first reading, St. Paul makes this point very clear when he tells the Corinthians that it was God himself who assured their (Timothy, Sylvanus and Paul himself) standing in Christ, and anointed them, marking them with the seal, and giving them the pledge, the Spirit they carried in their hearts. It was nothing to brag about. When it came to the content of their preaching therefore, it was only one message – God’s message!

How then can we radiate light without becoming proud? By not ‘stealing’ God’s glory. Jesus Christ does not encourage us to proclaim our good deeds from rooftops; He says that when we develop an attitude of goodness, we simply touch everyone around us with the light shining in and through us. It’s inevitable! We cannot see salt in our meals, but its presence, or lack of it, is unmistakable when we taste it. May our good deeds continue to glow without pride. And may our lights shine brightly, that we may become the much needed salt to make our world a much better place. Amen!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
