HOMILY OF TUESDAY 13TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME:  SAVE US!

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Matthew 8:23-27

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers it,” says Nelson Mandela in his autobiography titled Long Walk to Freedom. The Apostles were with Jesus in a boat that was tossed by the wind. They were overwhelmed with fear and cried out to Jesus: “Save us for we are perishing” (Matthew 8:25). Jesus rebuked them, saying, “Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26). He calmed the storm immediately.

There is a gloomy situation faced by Nigerian citizens over the past decade as the spate of violence, kidnappings, abductions, and killings have plagued the nation. An anonymous writer seeks to inspire everyone to counter fear with faith. The writer expressed: “My God and I will walk the plank together, my God and I will jump into the sea; My God and I will meet all kinds of weather; my God and I will walk triumphantly.”

Furthermore, the prophet Isaiah assures all those who are discouraged, disappointed, and terrified: “See, the Lord’s hand is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear” (Isaiah 59:1). In the face of fear and terror, let us turn to Jesus, who saves. May the Lord deliver us from the storms of terror that make us live in perpetual fear. Do we consistently direct our attention towards Christ during the turbulent and challenging moments we encounter in life?
