HOMILY OF THURSDAY 14TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOD IS ALSO MOTHER!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Hosea 11:1-4, 8-9; Psalm 79(80):2-7; Matthew 10:7-15
You remember the song dedicated to mothers, “who sat and watched my infant head, while sleeping on my cradle bed…? No, I do not wish to talk about mothers’ today. I would rather dwell on He who watches over mothers and their babies, even as mothers watch over their babies. Consider the terms Hosea uses in today’s first reading, “I loved Israel as a child, I taught Ephraim to walk… I was like someone who lifts an infant close against his cheeks…I gave him food…” These are all motherly functions. Aren’t they? But they are ultimately God’s functions.

Friends, our existence is one big gift. Let’s make sincere efforts then to become Apostles, who tell the suffering neighbour about God’s love and mercy; care for the weak and aged, limit the influence of the Kingdom of darkness… Christ first did it for us, now do it for others in his name. All these we see in the life of St Benedict. Unable to stomach the evil in his day, he decided to become a solitary hermit at Subiaco. Although many loved him, there were those who also sought to poison him because of the discipline he imposed on them. Benedict’s monastic rule reminds us to become more of ourselves as we struggle towards perfection. His life was an answer to the authentic call of discipleship.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
