HOMILY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: Mary’s Assumption: A Model for Our Pilgrimage

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Apo 11:19,12:1-6,10, Psalm 44:10-12,16, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, Luke 1:39-56

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This dogma reminds us of Mary’s extraordinary life of faith, hope, and love. Her yes to God’s will, her devotion to her Son, and her perseverance in the face of challenges exemplify the virtues of a true disciple.

Pope Pius XII solemnly defined as a divinely revealed dogma that the Immaculate Mother of God, Mary, was assumed, body and soul, into heavenly glory after her earthly life (Munificentissimus Deus, 44). This dogma is prefigured in the biblical accounts of Enoch and Elijah, who were taken up by God after their earthly mission (Genesis 5:24; 2 Kings 2:1-12).

We see in Mary’s Assumption a reflection of our hope for eternal life. She is the “exemplary realization” (typus) of the Church (Lumen Gentium, 68). We also glimpse the ultimate goal of our journey: to be taken up into the divine presence and to share in the glory of the risen Christ (Philippians 3:20-21).

As a pilgrim church, we are on a journey together towards our heavenly home. Just as pilgrims prepare for their journey, we must prepare ourselves for our arrival in the glory of heaven. Let us ask ourselves: Am I packing the right baggage for my journey? Am I following the map that leads to eternal life?

We can follow Mary’s example by saying yes to God’s will, being devoted to her Son, and trusting in God’s providence. By doing so, we will journey through life with purpose, direction, and hope, knowing that our destination is heaven.

Finally, Mary’s Assumption is a sign of hope for all Christians, a reminder that our journey on earth is not the end, but rather a preparation for the eternal feast in heaven. May she inspire us to live with faith, hope, and love, and to journey together towards our heavenly home. Amen.
