HOMILY OF THE 7TH THURSDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “THAT THEY MAY ALL BE ONE IN US”
BY: Fr. Ernest Cross
Acts 22:30, 23:6-11; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-11; John 17:20-26
The deep longing of Jesus’ Sacred Heart is beautifully expressed in the final part of His priestly prayer: “That they may all be one in Us” (Jn 17:21). The Son earnestly petitions the Father for our profound unity with the Trinity—a connection that embodies the essence of divine life—rather than simply asking for our collective harmony.

Eternal life is not a distant aspiration; it is communion. As articulated in John 17:3, Christ defines it as “so that they may know You and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” The term “know” here signifies a biblical intimacy—an inseparable bond that mirrors the relationship between the Father and the Son: “You in Me, and I in You… that they may be in Us” (John 17:21).
Christ desires His Bride, the Church, to be united with Him, just as He is united with the Father. We are invited to a relationship of inclusion, not mere imitation. “I made known to them Your name… that the love with which You loved Me may be in them” (Jn 17:26). Our spirits are enriched by the love that the Father holds for the Son.
How do we enter into this sacred union?
• Through Baptism, which integrates us into Christ’s Body.
• Through the Eucharist, where we partake of His glorified Humanity.
• Through love, which connects us to Him and to one another.
Let us dismantle every barrier of division! In a fractured world, our unity in Christ serves as a luminous testament to the eternal life that has already begun. “I in them and You in Me… that they may be brought to perfection as one” (Jn 17:23).
God bless you.
