HOMILY OF THE 5TH WEDNESDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: JESUS, THE TRUE VINE

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Acts 15:1-6, Ps.122:1-5, John 15:1-8

“I rejoiced when I heard them say: Let us go to God’s house. And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem” (Ps. 122: 1-2). The readings of today highlight the necessity of going back to our roots, the source of our faith. All the obstacles on the journey of faith have their solution in Jesus, the source of our life and in the Church, His visible presence on earth in the here and now.

In the first reading (Acts 15: 1-6), Paul and Barnabas were happy to go to Jerusalem to meet with the Apostles to resolve the issue of circumcision that arose in the faith community of Antioch. No one is “a know it all.” Let us always listen to the wise counsel of the Church that has the Apostles as its foundation.
In the gospel (John 15: 1-8), Jesus presents the image of the vine and the branches. He is the Vine, and we are the branches. Our lives depend totally on our oneness with Him. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. ” How deep is my root in Christ?
Dear friends, we have been given different gifts by the life-given-energy of the Vine – the Holy Spirit. Whatever good fruit that is to be produced depends on our constant acknowledgment of our source of life, the Vine, Jesus our Lord. All we have and are comes from Him. Any other source of our strength will surely dry up, and then we will wither.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will not make the mistake of thinking that our success in life is totally as a result of our ingenuity. May all stems of pride and arrogance be pruned from us so as to bear good and lasting fruit. As branches of the true vine, may we blossom in our daily endeavours. Have a Happy and a good fruit-full day!
