HOMILY OF THE 5TH THURSDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: ABIDE IN MY LOVE
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
Acts 15:7-21; Psalm 95(96):1-3, 10; John 15:9-11
Today’s Responsorial verse: “Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples” (Ps. 96: 3), ties the readings of today as a demand that is made of us so that our joy may be complete in the Lord.
The first reading (Acts 15: 7-21) gives account of the first Council of the Church, the Council of Jerusalem. Peter and the other Apostles, after listening to Paul and Barnabas, resolved not to burden the Gentile converts with the prescriptions of the Jewish law such as that of circumcision. It is not by the law, but “through the grace of the Lord Jesus,” have we all been saved. The word of God can purify the heart of anyone who accepts it in faith. We are called to be “on fire” to proclaim the Word.

In the gospel (John 15: 9-11), Jesus testifies that He has shared with us without reservation, the same love He shared with His Abba Father. Our joy can only be complete if we remain in this immeasurable and explosive love of God and share it as Jesus has shared it with us.
Dear friends, God’s love is a “consuming fire.” The avalanche of His love can sweep us off when we have a glimpse into its depth. The love that bridges all gaps in human relationships is what we are called to share. When we live in love, God lives in us for “God is Love.” Can you resolve to make love the bedrock of all your actions?
I pray as we journey in life today, we will try to overcome selfishness, pride, arrogance, and unforgiveness, but with the gentle touch of love, transform and transmit joy to all we encounter. We can transcend all challenges in life only if we can share love. May the joy of our hearts today know no bounds. Have a joy-full day!
