HOMILY OF THE 22ND TUESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: HE TEACHES WITH AUTHORITY

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

1 Thess 5:1-6, 9-11; Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14; Luke 4:31-37

Today we come to the end of the month of August. With all of its ups and downs, the joys and sorrows associated with it, we are reminded that “God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ… therefore encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thes 5: 9-11)
In the first reading (1 Th. 5: 1-6, 9-11), St. Paul urges the faithful at Thessalonica to be alert and ready for the Lord Jesus’ second coming, for the time of His return could be any time, and no one knows when it will be. They are to live as children of the light and not darkness. As children of the light and of the day, alertness and vigilance should be our watch words on our life’s journey. How ready am I to answer the call if Jesus comes today?

Unlike Jesus’ own people of Nazareth, in the gospel of today (Luke 4: 31-37) the people of Capernaum received and believed in Jesus, and He worked miracles of healing and casting out of devils in their midst as He preached. Jesus’ preaching made a great impression on them because He taught with authority. Their openness to the Word of God cracked open the “germinating power of the seed to bring forth freshness and new life.”
Dear friends, Jesus is the living and active Word of God the Father, by Whom all things exist, and in Whom all things are. Jesus speaks this same life-giving Word to us each day so that we may walk in the freedom of His love and truth. Am I truly open to the transforming power of this Word?
I pray as we journey in life today, in meakness and humility we will be eager to follow the directives of the Word so as to dispel the darkness in our lives and live as children of the light. May we not show any form of indifference when we hear the Word of God, but with full assent of faith and obedience, may we embrace the transforming power of the Word. Have a freedom-full day!
