HOMILY OF THE 16TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “IF TODAY YOU HEAR HIS VOICE…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
We read today that the Lord asked His people to prepare and purify themselves for His encounter with them in the wilderness as He came into their midst. He withdrew after the encounter. In Christ, God came to dwell amongst us, never to withdraw or leave us untended. We too should be disposed in purity and reverence as we encounter the Lord, who is always with us.

Our life must be one long offering of purity and reverence, a continuous response to God’s presence. When we reflect on God’s demand that Israel prepare for his coming amongst them, we cannot but renew our commitment to adequate preparation for every opportunity of encounter with the Lord. Such adequate preparation is for our own good as it opens us up to God’s grace. Let us always take time to make ourselves ready, no matter how in/significant we think the opportunity is. Like the disciples in the gospel, the great mysteries and treasures of God’s kingdom have been revealed and given to us to behold, imbibe, and disseminate. Our response to those gifts must be positive; honing our eyes and ears to see and hear God daily and generously sharing what we have seen and heard with others. We are God’s eye and ear witnesses on mission to the world around us. Let our every encounter with the Lord, especially in the sacraments, be marked by special preparations; we must never take God’s gifts for granted.
Lord, open our eyes, ears, and hearts to see, hear and behold you. Amen.
