HOMILY THEME: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.”

Acts 12:1-11, Ps 34:2-9, 2nd Timothy 4:6-18, Matthew 16:13-19
Today we celebrate two pillars of the Church whose lives show how human weakness could transformed by divine grace into missionary strength.
Peter, the impetuous and uneducated fisherman who declared that Jesus is “the Son of the living God,” received from Jesus the keys of the kingdom. Although he denied Jesus three times, he would later be passionately ready to face martyrdom for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul, once Saul the persecutor, became the fervent apostle to the Gentiles, declaring at the evening of his life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.”
The extraordinary missionary zeal of these two noble souls is rooted in their discovery that authentic evangelisation does not flow from human confidence but from deep encounter with mercy of God.
Peter’s tears of repentance became springs of pastoral compassion. Paul’s Damascus experience transformed his passionate persecution into passionate proclamation of the power of resurrection.
Their witness challenges us today: Are we merely registered member of a Christian community or passionate witnesses of the Risen Lord?
Like Peter and Paul, we are called to be missionaries of mercy, carrying Christ’s light to a world that desperately needs hope. Their martyrdom in Rome reminds us that true discipleship may cost everything, yet promises eternal joy. May their intercession inspire our own missionary courage.
