HOMILY OF MARY, OUR LADY OF SORROWS — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’” (John 19:26-27)
BY: Fr. Deotacious Chikontwe, SMA
Introduction
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Yesterday we celebrated the Holy Cross, and today we remember Mary standing right beside that cross. She went through the absolute worst pain a mother could ever feel—watching her own Son suffer and die. But even in that deep pain, God gave us something wonderful: He gave Mary to us to be our mother too.
From Our Gospel Reading
In today’s Gospel, Mary does not run away when things get scary and sad. She stays right there at the foot of the Cross.
Just before Jesus died, He looked down and said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then He said to His follower John, “Here is your mother.”
Jesus was doing something very special here. John stands for all of us. At that exact moment, Jesus gave Mary to all of us as our heavenly mother. Just as she took care of Jesus, she now watches over us, loves us, and prays for us from heaven.

From Our First Reading
In our reading from Hebrews, we hear that Jesus learned obedience through what He suffered. Mary did the same thing. When she was young, she said “Yes” to God’s plan. Even when a prophet told her that a sword of sorrow would pierce her heart, she never gave up on God. Her pain did not break her faith—it made her heart even bigger to love all of us.
WHAT DO WE LEARN TODAY?
Mary shows us how to follow God: When life gets tough, she shows us how to trust God and stay strong instead of running away.
We are never alone in our pain: Mary knows what it feels like to hurt, lose someone, and cry. Whenever you feel broken, you can talk to her because she understands.
We have a mother in heaven: Jesus didn’t leave us as orphans. He gave us His own mother to care for us.
Leave sin behind: Seeing how much Jesus and Mary suffered for us should make us want to stay away from sin and live good lives.
CONCLUSION
Let us thank God today for His great love and for giving us Mary. We are so lucky to have a mother in heaven who loves us this much.
Whenever you go through hard times, remember to welcome Mary into your heart and life, just like John did. May Our Lady of Sorrows comfort anyone who is hurting today and lead us all closer to her Son, Jesus.
Amen.
