HOMILY OF ASSUMPTION OF MARY — YEAR C

HOMILY OF ASSUMPTION OF MARY — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: MARY, ASSUMED INTO HEAVEN; PRAY FOR US

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Apo 11:19,12:1-6,10, Psalm 44:10-12,16, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, Luke 1:39-56

“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

Today, we celebrate, in Solemnity, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, Body and Soul (one of the four Dogmas on Our Lady in our Church, as defined by Pope Pius XII, on November 1, 1950). Without expending unnecessary time on exploring specific historical details of what we celebrate here, we are called to assent to a belief that celebrates Mary’s entry into heaven, with special provisions made by the same God, who was responsible for the mystery of the Incarnation, and who would not allow corruptibility to assault the one who bore the Christ in her womb to the world.

On Mary’s feast, we celebrate her faith, obedience and commitment; thanking God for her exemplary YES to the gift of the Messiah through her to us. We celebrate her generosity in sharing the blessings she received with others: just as she blessed Elizabeth, John, Simeon, Anna, and the disciples, so also, she continues to bless those who invoke her intercession and call her Blessed today. We learn from her thankful heart and bless God daily, sanctifying His Name, for all the blessings bestowed upon us, especially the gift of Mary to us as our Mother and Jesus to us as our Lord, brother and Savior. Because she remained faithful to the end in her sanctity, trust, faith, and hope, God united her with her Son and the Heavenly Hosts in her Assumption into Heaven, without allowing our sinful world to lay any claim to her. Just as God made her overcome the assault of the fierce dragon, so also through her prayers, God saves us from the assault of sin, evil and death. She is our journeying companion through life; she goes with us even through suffering and death, just as she accompanied her Son to the Cross and beyond. Through her intercession, Christ makes new wine for us out of our difficult and challenging situations of life. What is there not to love about her?

Lord Jesus, may your Mother intercede for us. Amen.
