HOMILY OF 7TH WEDNESDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Consecrate them in the truth; your word is truth.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 20:28-38, Ps. 68:29-30,33-36, John 17:18–19
Jesus continues his prayer on our behalf to the Father, expressing different concerns that pertain to our wellbeing. He prays that we may remain loyal and unflinching in our commitment to God and to the good news. He prays for our safety and security in a world that is hostile to those who are of Christ, that we may be protected from the treachery of the evil one.

And he asks the Father to sanctify us in the truth of the gospel; the truth that is Jesus himself, since he is the Word of God. It is a thing of joy that Jesus prays for us; ascended and seated at the right hand of the Father, he continues to intercede for us. But, we must also learn from his action that prayer is a way of life and we too must be people who bring our concerns for others and ourselves to God in prayer constantly and habitually. If Jesus prayed, who am I not to pray? Commending the leaders of the church in Ephesus to God for the work entrusted to them in today’s first reading, St. Paul did the same thing for them that Jesus did for us in the gospel. He prayed for them and commended them to God and the Holy Spirit. He warned them to beware of traitors (inside disruptors and dissenters) and the ways of the world and enjoined them to be charitable in their service and be people of integrity. This parting message from Paul anticipated his destiny in Rome and was source of sadness to the community, but Paul’s focus on his destiny was committed to God in prayer by the entire community: signifying that God is, indeed, in control. As we pray for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit, may Jesus’ prayer for us aid us in our journey through today’s challenging and difficult terrains. When the journey gets really difficult, remember that you are never alone. Jesus is with you. Knowing that Jesus is praying for you even now is a great source of strength, encouragement and comfort.
Father, consecrate us in the truth; sanctify and bless this month of June for us and our families. Amen.
