HOMILY OF 7TH MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY OF 7TH MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “I AM THE WAY”

BY: Fr. Ernest Cross

Acts 19:1-8; Psalm 67(68):2-7; John 16:29-33

The last supper, which took place the night before Jesus was crucified, provides the backdrop for this morning’s gospel reading. Jesus clearly warns his disciples that they will soon be dispersed, everyone going their own way and abandoning Jesus. He declares their failure and unfaithfulness to him. Jesus had said, “I am the way,” previously.

His followers, meanwhile, would follow their own way. There is this modern disposition to do it your way. But the gospel exhorts us to follow Jesus’ example. As Jesus showed when he washed the disciples’ feet, we are to follow his way, which is the road of loving service of others, rather than our own. This is the way to a genuine existence.

In addition to saying, “I am the way,” Jesus also added, “I am the life.” We will endeavour to continue making this choice with the Lord’s help. Jesus stated in the gospel reading, “I am not alone because the Father is with me.” And we’re not alone. We can continue to choose the way of life that the risen Lord has for us because he is with us.

God bless you.
