HOMILY OF 6TH WEDNESDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: TRUTH REVEALED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Acts 17:15, 22—18:1; John 16:12–15

The readings of today hinge on and confirm the doctrine that the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit in the mystery of our redemption is inseparable. From the Incarnation through to Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, the Holy Spirit was directly and inseparably involved at each stage in the economy of our salvation. The Holy Spirit is still ever present in our faith journey, for we never journey alone.

Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life promises His disciples in the gospel today (John 16: 12-15), that He will send to them when He is gone, the Spirit of Truth who will lead them to understanding the complete truth. All that the Holy Spirit is going to tell us will be taken from what belongs to Christ since all authority in heaven and earth have been given to Him by the Father (Matt. 28: 18).
It is this Truth which the Holy Spirit teaches that Paul carried to the men of Athens as he spoke to the Council of Areopagus in the first reading (Acts 17: 15, 22- 18: 1). Paul, empowered by the truth revealed by the Holy Spirit, took the gospel message, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, to the pagan world. Though he was scoffed and mocked, there were some who were touched by the truth of the message. Such were set free from the bondage of ignorance and pride.
Dear friends, there is always something unknown about God. These are the things the Holy Spirit will reveal to us. We are called to make the Holy Spirit our companion in life. Pope Leo XIII said: “we should direct towards Him the highest homage of our love and devotion… daily strive to know Him, to love Him, and to implore Him more earnestly” (Divinum Illud Munus , 10). We can not be effective as Christians without the Holy Spirit.
I pray as we journey in life today, we will be docile and attentively listen to the Word of God and implore the Holy Spirit to give us understanding of God’s truth and God’s plan for our life. May we be set free from ignorance of God’s truth and sinful pride. Have a Truth-full day!
