HOMILY OF 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “HERE I AM,” I SAID; “SEND ME!”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isaiah 6:1-2,3-8, 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, Luke 5:1-11

The calls of Isaiah and Peter to ministry in today’s readings remind us of our own invitation to share in the life of Christ through our baptism, as well as the individual vocations we have received to participate in that life through our respective and particular missions. Like them, none of us is worthy. God, whose initiative it is to work and journey with us, is the one who prepares us for our mission. He calls, he purifies, he sanctifies, and he sends.

On our part, we only need to dispose ourselves generously so that God can make us over into fishers of human beings. We also learn from the Peter episode that our journey is much easier and more fruitful when we journey with God, for, “in vain does the builder labor, who works without the Lord.” Jesus is with us in our boat. Let us obey him when he challenges us to “put out into the deep for a catch” (trusting God and not being afraid to take risks) and we will be amazed at what such efforts yield. Our response to God’s call must be full, prompt and undiluted, without distractions and unconditional, to be fruitful. The second reading gives us a crystalized format of the foundations of our Christian faith: that 1. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; 2. He was buried; 3. He rose from the dead in accordance with the Scriptures; and 4. He made himself known to his disciples. That also is the content of the early Church kerygma and the nucleus of the witness that we bear as messengers of Christ. There are many occasions around us that are determined by needs and God is looking for messengers through whom He would meet such needs. God says: “whom shall I send.” Whenever and from wherever that call comes, our response must be: “here I am Lord, Send me.

Lord, sanctify, equip and fortify me for the missions you entrust to me. Amen.
