HOMILY OF 5TH MONDAY IN LENT: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: THE MERCIFUL FATHER
BY: Fr. Ernest Cross
Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62; John 8:1-11
For the most part, we like to believe that we are satisfying others. Whenever we believe we have offended someone, we have a tendency to become upset ourselves. Jesus’ final statement, “I always do what pleases him,” in this morning’s gospel reading really stood out to me. Jesus’ top objective was to please God, and in doing so, he frequently found himself outraged by many people, particularly the influential and powerful.

He was crucified because he was so committed to doing what God wanted. “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work,” Jesus stated elsewhere in John’s gospel. His greatest desire in life was to do what God wanted. Jesus’ life and death taught us that if we think pleasing others is important , then pleasing God and obeying what He commands must be much more important.
We don’t always understand what God wants as clearly as Jesus did. To determine what God desires of us and what pleases him, we require the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the gift of wisdom. After determining what God desires, we make an effort to follow that, even if it means upsetting other people. We will require the Holy Spirit’s assistance once more in this situation, specifically the gift of courage.
God bless you.
