HOMILY OF 34TH TUESDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “THE TIME TO REAP HAS COME, BECAUSE THE EARTH’S HARVEST IS FULLY RIPE.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Apoc 14:14-19; Psalm 96:10-13; Luke 21:5-11

Harvest is a biblical imagery of the judgment that follows the end of earthly life. Today’s readings indicate that Judgment Day is certain to come. Despite its certainty, the Lord tells us that no one knows the time and how this will come about. It is also noted that those who refuse to heed the call to vigilance, constant prayer, and preparedness, in addition to living good and virtuous lives, would be taken by surprise, unawares.

Also taken unawares would be those who get so engrossed in the attractions of this world that they lose the sense of the life after. Just like the Jerusalem imagery in Jesus’ prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem, death brings down every edifice that was built strictly on earthly merits, and not one block stands on another because the life one knew before death simply becomes a pile of rubble, ruins. As we have been reminded often, we live in the end times. In the midst of the attending challenges and difficulties, the Lord urges us to stay the course, not to allow ourselves to be deceived or swayed by fake promises and propaganda, and to stay focused on the ultimate end of our lives on earth: to live well (godly lives) in this world so as to be happy with God forever in the next. Let us always remember that at harvest, no one will be left out, and all will be judged according the lives they have lived.

Lord, give us the courage to stay the course, regardless of where life brings us, so that we may share life with you in eternity. Amen.
