HOMILY OF 31ST TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “Happy the one who will be at the Feast in the Kingdom of God.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Philippians 2:5-11, Ps. 22:26-32, Luke 14:15-24
The last two days were about being in the Feast of the Lord’s kingdom. We have all been invited. It doesn’t matter at this point whether we were the primary invitees or the ones from the open roads and hedgerows. The Lord has thrown the invitation open to all. He does not want us to be near the feast; he wants us in it; active participants and beneficiaries. If we reject the invitation with flimsy or any excuse at all, the dire consequences are laid out: “they shall not taste of my banquet,” says the Lord. Such a person is completely separated from the Lord of the feast; and is as good as dead. A proper, wholesome and cheerful response is what the Lord expects, for the banquet is a celebration. If Jesus gave excuses, we would have remained in bondage. His response was total obedience, profound humility and a generous self-emptying. All gave way to his exaltation over all creation, powers and principalities, which were in turn put under his feet.

We must imitate Jesus’ exemplary obedience and humility to secure our place at the banquet without excuses. Lastly, we are reminded of the power of the Name of Jesus again today. Let us not profane that Name. Let us reap the benefits accruing from faithfully and devotedly putting that Name to work in our lives. It opens doors and conquers all things; simple as that.
Lord, forgive us for the many excuses we offer for not returning your love and open the doors of mercy and life for us in the Name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
