HOMILY OF 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Is. 62:1-5, I Cor. 12:4-11, Jn. 2:1-11
Today, all three readings encourage and challenge us at the same time. Isaiah reassures us of God’s faithfulness. God, in His mercy, never abandons His own. We may be undeserving by virtue of our failures, but God brings us back and restores us to communion and a virtuous life.

St. Paul then reminds us that everyone has been given a special gift, a charism, to exercise for the good of the collective whole. While proudly exercising and celebrating our gifts, we must always exercise them in relation to and in communion with others’, since no one has everything needed to make the whole. So, we must respectfully recognize and accommodate others’ gifts in the wholesome workings of the community in which we live/worship. We should neither be so selfish or proud that our attitude and disposition exclude, disrespect or repulse others’ charisms. The gospel reassures us that Mary, our mother, watches out for us even when we are unaware. We need her in our home and hearts like the beloved disciple, and as long as we have her, she would ask for us even before we realize we are in trouble. Even as Jesus’ first sign foreshadows the eternal banquet at the end of time for the people of the New Covenant, symbolized in the gift of abundant wine, we can trust that the Lord will turn the ordinary water of our daily drudgery into life-giving remedies and outcomes for us. Meanwhile, let us always listen to the instruction from our mother, Mary: “do whatever he tells you.”
Lord, transform our lives with your presence. Amen.
