HOMILY OF 29TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “YOU TOO MUST STAND READY…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Eph 3:2-12; Psalm (Isaiah 12); Luke 12:39-48
Jesus’ instruction for us to prepare for the Day of the Lord is a constant reminder that we cannot let our guards down. As baptized people, we know what God expects of us. May we always have the courage to do exactly what God is calling us to do and be. Constant vigilance is what is expected of us. The best way to do that is to start living our heaven here on earth. No one has control over how and when s/he would die. But, we can certainly choose what awaits us by the lives that we live here on earth.

Living carelessly or on our own terms is living dangerously. Living godly lives, infused by the Spirit of God and after the example of Christ is what brings us into friendship and communion with God. That possibility of life with such a wonderful outcome, as St. Paul reminds us today, is made available to all, without exclusion, in Christ Jesus. The harshness of what Jesus taught was what made Peter ask the question: “Lord, do you mean this parable for us, or for everyone?” All humans will be subject to God’s judgment as the Letter to the Hebrews teaches us (9:27-28). Together with the Catechism, we learn that there are four last things: death, judgment, heaven or hell. We have no control over the first two. We can, however, choose between the last two. By the choices we make, we are judged. Life is short. Let us spend it loving God faithfully and passionately, and loving our neighbor as God has commanded us.
Lord, bring us, by the merits of your passion, death and resurrection, to draw and drink from the wells of salvation. Amen.
