HOMILY OF 23RD WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THE BEATITUDES

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

Colossians 3:1-11, Ps. 145:2-3, 10-11, Luke 6:20-26

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
Today’s readings from Colossians and Luke both tell us the same important message: we need to decide what matters most in our lives.

From our First Reading

In the first reading, St. Paul says that because of our baptism, we are new people.

And The old, sinful part of us is gone. We are now living a new life with Jesus. Paul tells us to “seek what is above,” and to “think about what is above, not what is on earth.” This doesn’t mean we should ignore our lives here. It means our main goal shouldn’t be to get more money, power, or fame. Our real treasure is with God.

From our gospel reading

The Gospel from Luke says this in a very clear way. Jesus gives us blessings and warnings that are different from what the world thinks. He blesses the poor, the hungry, those who cry, and those who are hated for his sake. He warns the rich, the well-fed, and those who are praised by everyone. Jesus is telling us that true happiness isn’t found in being comfortable or popular. It’s found in following him, even when it’s hard.

So, what does this mean for us today?

We need to look at our own hearts. Are we living for the things of this world, or are we living for Jesus? Are we chasing after things that don’t last, or are we working for the lasting joy and peace that only God can give? When we worry about money, our social status, or not being noticed, we should remember what St. Paul said: “Your life is now with Christ in God.”

Today, let’s pray for the grace to always put Jesus first in our lives. Let’s ask for the strength to let go of things that don’t matter and to follow what the Gospel teaches. May we be a people who look to what is above, and who find our greatest happiness not in what we have, but in who we belong to.

Have a blessed Wednesday Everyone
