HOMILY OF 17TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS LIKE MUSTARD SEED

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

Exod 32:15-24, 30-34; Psalm 105(106):19-23; Matt 13:31-35

My dear friends,
Today’s readings show us two sides of God: His justice and His mercy, and how His Kingdom grows.

About the First Reading

In our first reading, we see God’s anger when His people worshipped a golden calf. This reminds us that God is holy and doesn’t want anything else to take His place in our hearts. But then, Moses steps in and asks God to forgive them, and God, in His great mercy, does. This shows us that even when we mess up, God is ready to forgive if we turn back to Him.

About the Gospel reading

In our gospel reading, Jesus tells us about the mustard seed and yeast. These tiny things have a huge impact! The mustard seed, though small, grows into a large plant. A little yeast makes a whole batch of dough rise. This is like God’s Kingdom. It started small with Jesus and a few followers, and it often grows in our lives in quiet, unseen ways.

So what do we learn from the Readings of today?

So, the message for us is this: God is just, and He cares deeply when we turn away from Him. But He’s also incredibly merciful and always ready to forgive. And His Kingdom, which is at work in us and the world, often grows from small beginnings. Don’t underestimate the power of your small acts of faith, kindness, or prayer. They are like those tiny seeds and yeast, quietly making a big difference.

Conclusion

So today, let us recommit ourselves to being those seeds, to being that yeast. Let us cultivate a spirit of repentance, always ready to turn back to God when we stumble. And let us embrace the quiet, persistent work of God’s grace in our lives, knowing that even our smallest efforts, when offered to Him, can contribute to the magnificent growth of His Kingdom.

Have a blessed Monday with a wonderful new week!
