HOMILY OF 17TH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: WHERE DID HE GET IT ALL?
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Lev 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Psalm 81:3-6, 10-11; Matt 13:54-58
Jesus Christ taught with such wisdom, and worked many outstanding miracles that the people couldn’t help but ask “where did the man get it all?” They knew he was the son of an ‘ordinary’ carpenter. They knew his brothers and sisters. They lived with him and knew him ‘to his house’; literally. So they could not bring themselves to accept him. Which was of course why Jesus could not work as many miracles in his home town as he did elsewhere.

Friends, St. Alphonsus De Liguori, whose memorial we celebrate today, was already a renowned lawyer when he felt God’s call. But he abandoned his law practice to become a priest. This is what happens when we place our talents at God’s disposal. Though his family objected, he forged ahead. He later formed the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). He made himself useful, and through the many chapels of devotion he established, and the way he used his many talents, many more souls were brought to God. Can we do the same? Do not tarry!
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. St Alphonsus De Liguori, pray for us. Welcome to the New Month of August!
