HOMILY OF 16TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: JESUS, THE ONLY AND AUTHENTIC SIGN

BY: Fr. Isaac Awe

Matt 12:38-42

What is that sickness, setbacks , challenges of life tossing you up and down that made you to have concluded that there is not God? The divine consolation is as follows: “ Have no fear! Stand firm and see the work the lord will do to save you today. The Egyptians whom you see today, you will never see again! The lord will fight for you and all you have to do is to keep calm.”(Exodus 14:13-14)

Those who run after foreign gods only have their sorrows multiplied. (Psalm 16:4). In our first reading today, the only authentic sign that Moses sought after the complaints of the Israelites was God and the sign worked for them. Moses knew who God is and what he was capable of doing while they were not disappointed.

What would Jesus say about our generation? Jesus gave a rather stern warning to his generation when they demanded a sign from him. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded “signs” from God’s messengers to authenticate their claims. Jesus faulted them for one thing: spiritual adultery. The image of adultery was often used in the scriptures for describing apostasy or infidelity towards God.

Do we thirst for Godly wisdom? St James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single mind desires one thing alone, that which is good and ordered according to God’s wise plan. Let us ask the Lord to renew our minds and to increase our thirst for his wisdom.

PRAYER: Lord, give us your wisdom and increase our love for your ways. Help us to resist temptation and all wilfulness that we may wholly desire to do what is pleasing to you. Amen
