HOMILY OF 14TH WEDNESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “GO TO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.”

Today’s gospel lists the names of Jesus’ twelve apostles, whom he sent out into Israel, this being the first official missioning, now that he has taught them God’s word (Matthew 5-7) and shown them God’s saving power in his miracles (Matthew 8-9). The second mission at the end of the gospel is universal, “make disciples of all nations.” Whether lost sheep or all nations, both missions remain relevant to date and the mission field remains vast. We are all enlisted with these apostles by virtue of our baptism. These mission fields are both distant and local, sometimes even within our families. We don’t need to look very far to find a or some lost sheep. They are the objects of our mission and Christ invites us to announce the good news to them.

The first reading gives us a clue to an effective means of proclaiming the good news: a ministry of mercy and forgiveness. We all know what Joseph’s brothers did. They sold him into slavery; actually, they initially wanted to kill him. God ransomed him and gave him fortunes. Now his brothers were at his mercy. He forgave them and was kind and generous to them. That is surely an effective way of bringing people to God. We need more Joseph-like people and actions in our lives, families and communities.
Lord, make us instruments of mercy and forgiveness. Amen.
