HOMILY OF 14TH SUNDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: JESUS SHARES OUR HEAVY LOAD

BY: Fr. Deotacious Chikontwe, SMA

Zech. 9:9-10 / Rom. 8:9, 11-13 / Matt 11:25-30

Introduction

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we live in a very busy world. We are constantly told to work harder, run faster, and do more. It makes us very tired.

But today, Jesus looks at our tired faces and says something wonderful:

“Come to me, all you who are tired and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”

Today’s readings show us that God does not want to make our lives harder. He wants to help us carry our heavy bags.

Understanding the Word of God for Today

1. The First Reading (Zechariah 9:9-10)

A long time ago, God’s people were tired of war and sadness. They wanted a strong king on a big horse to fight for them. But the prophet Zechariah told them their king would be different. He would be gentle, and he would ride into town on a simple donkey to bring peace.

The Core Lesson: God does not use force or anger to change the world. He wins our hearts with gentleness and peace.

1. The Second Reading (Romans 8:9, 11-13)

Saint Paul tells us that God puts His Holy Spirit inside our hearts. When we try to do everything by our own human power, we get stressed, selfish, and tired. But when we let the Spirit guide us, we find true life.

The Core Lesson: We cannot live a good Christian life purely on our own willpower. We must allow the Holy Spirit to live inside us and guide our daily choices.

1. The Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30)

Jesus says that proud people who think they know everything miss out on God. Only humble people—like little children—can understand Him.

Then, Jesus tells us to take His yoke. A yoke is a wooden bar put on two oxen so they can pull a heavy cart together. Usually, a big, strong ox is paired with a small, weak ox to help it. Jesus is saying: “Stop trying to pull the heavy cart of life all by yourself. Let me stand next to you. I am strong, and I will pull the heavy side for you.”

The Core Lesson: True rest is found in humility. When we stop trying to control everything and trust Jesus instead, our heavy burdens become light.

Three Practical Lessons we learn for our Daily Life

1. Ask for Help:

We need to be like little children. We must be honest and tell Jesus, “Lord, I cannot do this alone. I need your help.”

2. Jesus Shares the Weight:

Jesus does not promise that life will never have problems. However, He promises that He will stand right next to us in the middle of those problems. With Jesus helping us, the load feels light.

3. Be Gentle:

The world tells us to be loud and pushy to get what we want. Jesus shows us that being gentle and kind is the real way to be strong.

Conclusion

Are you feeling tired today? Are you worried about money, your family, or your health?

Jesus is standing right next to you. He is holding out His hand, ready to help you carry your problems. Stop trying to be strong all by yourself. Let Jesus help you. He loves you, and He wants to give you rest.

When we realize that our King is this kind and this gentle, our hearts fill with joy. We can look at Him today and sing the words of Psalm 145: “I will bless your name for ever, O God my King.” Let that be our prayer this week. Because He carries our heavy loads, we will praise His name forever.

Final Blessings

May the Lord Jesus, who is gentle and kind, take away your worries and give you peace.

May the Holy Spirit fill your heart with joy and give you strength when you feel tired.

May Almighty God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—bless you and keep you safe this week.
