HOMILY THEME: “RADICAL GENEROSITY”

2 Cor 9:6-11; Psalm 112:1-4, 9; Matt 6:1-6, 16-18
The last couple of days have seen us reflect on grace and generosity towards others. Today, we are being reminded of “Radical Generosity”- not giving for recognition but only to glorify God in thanksgiving for His abundant generosity in our lives. God can not be outdone in generosity!

In the first reading (2 Cor. 9: 6-11), Paul urges the Corinthians to be gracious in their care for the less privileged and to do so cheerfully and not grudgingly. Giving should not be as a result of obligation. Rather, it should flow from having been graced with so much from a gracious God.
In the gospel (Matt. 6: 1-6, 16-18), Jesus reminds his disciples of the three pillars of practical Christianity-almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. These acts should be carried out not for acknowledgement and exultation by others but as a fitting response to a relationship with the God who sees and knows all.
Dear friends, generosity is much more than financial or physical assistance. It all entails being present in the presence of the other’s life situation. It can be speaking an encouraging or uplifting words or being with someone as they go through some difficulty. We are gifted not so much that we may gain personal fame, wealth, or prestige, but that we may edify and build up each other. Are you really generous? And what is it that motivates your generosity?
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will remember God’s goodness in our lives and respond by sharing such with others to glorify God’s Name. May the message of Christ in all its richness find a home in us (Col. 3:16). Have a thanks-giving-full day!
