HOMILY OF 11TH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY OF 11TH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “O Lord, my heart is not proud nor haughty my eyes”

BY: Fr. Francis Onwunali

2 Cor 11:18, 21-30; Psalm 33(34):2-7; Matt 6:19-23

The liturgy of today reminds us that the treasure of God’s kingdom produces unspeakable joy because it unites us with the source of all joy and blessings which is God himself. God offers us the treasure of unending joy and friendship with himself and with all who are united with him in his heavenly kingdom.

St. Paul, in today’s first reading (2 Cor 11: 18, 21-30), narrates to the Corinthians all he has endured for the sake of spreading the Gospel. He endured all the hardships because of how valuable their acceptance of the Gospel message of salvation is to him. The struggle through which he has suffered are gladly accepted if they are to benefit others and assist them to draw closer to God. He boasts not out of selfishness, rather to the glory of God. Am I offering any service for my own glory and enrichment or to honour God?
Jesus, in the gospel (Matt 6: 19-23) remarks that where our heart is, there will our treasure be. If we seek to amass merely earthly possessions, then we will be disappointed because they will not count for us nor accompany through the door of eternity. However, if we seek for heavenly treasure house, we will be able to experience the eternal wealth of God.
Dear friends, at times we are urged on to seek worldly wealth, fame and beauty even to the detriment of relationship of family, friends and God. What is it that is of utmost value to you? St. Paul was ready to risk everything for the sake of the eternal wealth (eternal life).
I pray as we journey in life today, we will rethink and reorder our values. May the embrace of heavenly treasure be our purpose in life. Let us pray with the Psalmist from the sincerity of our hearts: “O Lord, my heart is not proud nor haughty my eyes. I have not gone after things too great nor marvels beyond me. Truly I have set my soul in silence and peace” (Ps. 131: 1-2). Have a contentment-full day!
