HOMILY FRIDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER. (1)

HOMILY FRIDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER.

THEME: Going fishing?

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Acts 4:1-12; John 21:1-14

Don’t you just love Simon Peter? He is quick to make a mistake, and even quicker to get back on his feet. A few days after the resurrection, some of the Apostles are by the sea of Tiberias (or sea of Galilee) and Peter remembers how he used to fish before he was called, so he decides to go fishing. The others of course decide to come with him. But they work all night and catch nothing. When Jesus appears, this same Peter is the first to jump into the water towards him, rather than hide his head in shame.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR EASTER FRIDAY.

Friends, sometimes we can get discouraged under the many demands of our Christian calling and feel the need to go back to our old trades. But even then, Jesus does not condemn us, just as he does not condemn Peter and the others today. He rather aids them to catch 153 different species of big fishes; a symbol of all the tribes of the then known world. In other words, he gently reminds them that though catching fish is okay, it was more pressing to fish disciples from all works of life, for the growing Kingdom of God. Are we ready to go fishing?

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend ahead.
