Homily for Wednesday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time Cycle II

Homily for Wednesday June 3 2020

*2 Tim 1 :1-12, Mk 12 :18 – 27.

There are too many ‘dead Christians’ in the Church today. They move about, give offerings, receive communion and even preach the Word of God but they are spiritually dead – because they ‘neither know the scriptures nor the power of God’. St Paul is speaking to such people in today’s 1st reading to try and rekindle the gifts they received that seem to be dead now – latent gifts are as good as dead ; Your baptismal potentials for holiness, your confirmational charisms for witnessing as a child of God, your priestly anointing for Pastoral and spiritual exploits, your matrimonial blessings for agape love in your family and for procreation and education of your children. O my God! Let believers wake up and not be ashamed of witnessing to the gospel!

There are so many ‘Pharisees and Sadducees’ in our Churches today. Pharisees are fanatics who think that everything is spiritual. They see demons everywhere and every rat or bird that passes his/her compound will be thundered by ‘Holy Ghost fire’. Sadducees think that everything depends on man’s power and knowledge. They don’t believe in the grace of God and the working of the Holy Spirit in the Church. When they are priests, they criticize everything that is spiritual and live in scandalous comfort zones with heavy bank accounts to protect their future. They finish their homilies without any reference to the Scriptures because they don’t regard it. When they are lay people, they want to depend on their own strength to run their families and are always very stingy in giving offerings in the Church.

Jesus reproves us – the Sadducees in the house of God for challenging the reality of miracles, the existence of charisms like tongues, prophesy, healing, visions, exorcism, etc and even denying the resurrection of the dead. Many ‘Sadducees’ in the Church, for example, think that the Blessed Virgin Mary is dead and therefore cannot help us in prayers any more. But Jesus is telling them today that they are wrong because those who die in the Lord are still spiritually alife . He is the resurrection and life so whoever believes in him shall not die, Jn 11 :25. He is God of the living not of the dead!

May God bless you today!
