HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT.

THEME: SELFLESS SERVICE.

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali.

The readings of today’s liturgy are calling us to selfless service for the good of the other. Though in serving others, rejection and even threat to life may come even from our loved ones, but the glory that awaits us far outweighs the earthly pain.

This was the situation of Jeremiah in our first reading (Jer 18: 18-20). In obedience to God’s word and command, Jeremiah spoke words of salvation to the people of Israel. However, his words (God’s Word) were at odds with their ambition and way of life. Hence, the rejection and threat to his life.

In the gospel (Matt 20: 17-28), Jesus tells His disciples of His coming passion, death and glory; and responded to James and John’s request to be at His right and left hand in His kingdom. Jesus insists that such positions are meant for those who do the will of the Father, which entails selfless obedience and service onto others.

Dear friends, the only way one can advance in God’s kingdom is by submitting one’s whole life in faith and obedience to God. Jesus surrendered His will to the will of the Father – He willingly chose the Father’s path to glory – a path that leads to suffering and death, redemption, and new life. Authority without love, a love that is oriented towards the good of others, easily becomes self-serving and brutish. How service oriented am I towards my neighbours, or is everything all about myself?

I pray that as we journey in life today, we will realize that true servanthood is neither demeaning nor oppressive because its motivating force is love rather than pride or fear. “Lord Jesus, make me a servant of love for your kingdom that I may seek to serve rather than be served. Inflame my heart with your love that I may give generously and serve others joyfully for your sake. ” Have service-oriented-full day!
