HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT.

THEME: Be careful what you wish for!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Jer.18:18-20; Matt. 20:17-28

So Jesus was busy talking about his suffering and death, and the mother of James and John came with a most ‘inappropriate’ request. She wanted her sons to ‘flank’ Jesus in his Kingdom. In truth, this woman had no idea what she wished for. Even when her sons assured Jesus they could drink his cup, He still wouldn’t concede to the request.

Sometimes, as Christians, we get carried away by positions in the Church. We forget that every position ought to be of service. Yes! Why do people rejoice when they win elections, or are chosen by the Holy Spirit to be Bishops? They should rather hang their heads in sober reflection, because these positions are arduous. They should not be exalted positions at all. It is difficult and strenuous to be a chief servant. Hence, if you’re a leader in any way, get ready to drink Christ’s cup of suffering and sacrifice, for as the Igbo adage goes, “there’s no easy road to Arochukwu.”

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
