Homily for Wednesday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time Cycle II

By: Fr. Benedict Agbo

Homily for Wednesday September 16 2020

* 1 Cor 12: 31- 13: 13, Lk 7: 31 – 35.
Without love, everything we do both in the secular and ecclesiastical life is corrupted. Without love, even the prayers and intercessions of priests, the speaking in tongues and praise worship of prayer warriors become mere religious citations ; Without love, even the prophetic ministry of priests and evangelists get swarped in the quagmire of egotism and pride ; Without love, all our education and academic degrees will only turn us into useless and mere speech makers just trained to play to the gallery ; Without love, our faith will turn us into fanatics and protestants because nobody will be able to listen to the other anymore, so, everybody will begin his own Church ; Without love, even our offerings will be like faith deposits in the MACRO FINANCE BANK OF HEAVEN where Christians merely count how much they have deposited in God’s bank and how much God must pay them back with amazing interests ; Without love, even our desire for martyrdom will be no different from the ‘Boko haram’ suicide bomber who kills himself to pursue a most worthless cause.

Our generation needs love and sound judgment in order to avoid unnecessary polarization and negative divides especially in the house of God. Just look at today’s gospel and see how the religious men of the time misinterpreted everything that Jesus did and opposed him.

Religion comes with two weapons; the weapon of love and the weapon of hatred. The weapons of love come from the objective worship of God while the weapons of hatred come from the passion against so called ‘heretics’ or unbelievers – those who do not see things from the same prism as we do. Everything a man does (including his “good morning greetings”) can be misinterpreted by his enemies but with love every action simmers together onto good. According to Immanuel Kant, ‘The only thing that can be described as good without qualification is a good will’. Only love can save the world and the Church – and this love must be AGAPE Love. Oh! We need this kind of love!

May God bless you today!
